£50 Reward. Murder!
Reward notice offering a £50 reward for the apprehension of the murderer of Eliza Davies, barmaid at the King's Arms Public House, Frederick Street, Regent's Park to be paid by the proprietors of the pub. Dated Friday May 12th 1837 the notice gives a description of the suspected murderer including his clothing and notes 'He is no foreigner as has been stated in some of the papers'. This probably refers to misinformation printed in the papers and broadsides, such as that published by Thomas Birt that a French modeller named Entre was 'strongly suspected' of the crime, as he was heard to say on Saturday last that he would do for the deceased, because she refused to trust him with some liquors'. The murder of Eliza remained unsolved and no-one was ever arrested or tried for her murder.
