Social History — 1800-1899
Sign, theatre sign
This painted wooden sign directed theatre goers to the Pit entrance of the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. The sign is of stained wood with gold lettering. Theatres traditionally have three seating areas - the boxes, galleries and pit, each usually having its own separate entrance. As indicated by the hand painted on the sign, the pit was on the lower ground level of the auditorium.
