An Ice House in London's Little Italy
This photograph shows an Ice House in Clerkenwell, the heart of London's Italian community. By 1901 London's ice trade was exclusively run by italians living in the area known as 'Little Italy'. Ice was brought to the capital from Norway and transported to ice wells in Clerkenwell via the nearby Regent's Canal. It could then be purchased from ice houses, such as the one depicted, for making ice cream and preserving food.
