This bell shaped air-raid shelter, known as a Consol, was made from a single piece of solid steel bolted to a concrete base. Designed by engineers at the Port of London Authority and manufactured by John Mowlem and Company the shelters provided cover and protection against bullets, bomb blasts, falling debris and shrapnel. Capable of holding up to two adults Consols were primarily used by PLA employees who worked outside and were unable to leave their posts during air raid attacks such as Policemen and Fire Wardens. Ventilation panels in the shelter were also used by the occupants to view what was happening outside. This example was recovered from the Fire Station at Prince Regents Lane.
