Saint John's Gate, Clerkenwell
St John's Gate, Clerkenwell, 1886. This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 1880s. Much change to the surrounding area, and the rebuilding of St John's Gate itself, occured in the mid 19th century. The Gate was acquired by the Order of St. John in the 1870s, who embarked upon further refurbishment work.
