Canonbury Tower
Canonbury Tower, Islington, 1879. This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 1880s. The tower was built in the 1590s by Sir John Spencer, one time Lord Mayor of London. Whilst the area around the tower has been extensively rebuilt over the centuries the tower itself has remained intact. Since 2003 it has been used as a Masonic research centre
