Shop in Brewer Street, Soho
A shop in Brewer Street, Soho, 1878.This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 1880s. The shop dated from the early 18th century and was built at a time when Soho was a fashionable part of town. By the mid 19th century, however, the area was in decline and, following outbreaks of cholera in the 1850s and 1860s, was becoming ripe for redevelopment. The shop may have disappeared in the early 1880s when part of Brewer Street was demolished to make way for new dwellings
