The Lord of Hosts - Word at Dunbar - Septem. Y3. 1650
Cromwell medal - wording on obverse: Word at Dunbar - The Lord of Hosts - Septem. Y.3. 1650. This commemorates the Battle of Dunbar in which Cromwell defeated the Covenanters on 3 September 1653. The Dunbar medal was the first of its kind for an English army, issued in gold for officers and silver for other ranks: there was no similar medal until Waterloo in 1815. The reverse shows the House of Commons in session. James Hulett (d 1771) illustrated Francis Peck's Memoirs of the Life and Actions of Oliver Cromwell (1740), from which this may derive.
