Robert Earle of Essex his Excellence Lord Generall of the Parli'mts Army etc: lately deceased. The third earl of Essex (15911646), who, having lost favour at court, fought in the protestant armies in the Lowlands from 1620-24, became an unsuccessful commander on the Parliamentarian side in the civil war, was deprived of his command in 1645 and died a year later. The dating assumes that this is not a reprint.
