Thos Beard, Schoolmaster to Olivr Cromwell
Thos Beard, Schoolmaster to Olivr Cromwell. Beard (c.1568-1632) was a virulently anti-Catholic Church of England clergyman and author, reputedly from Huntingdon, where he became master of the free school in 1604 wher Oliver Cromwell was later to be a pupil. He is shown standing before a high bookshelf with heavily bound volumes ("Cicer I, Cicer II, Nizolius, Calepin, Cato, Florespoet[?]") with two schoolboys behind him, all dresed in flowing cloaks. He says (in a speech banner) "As in Praesenti".
