Islington in the early 19th century. Two men lean on a post-and-rail fence and talk. One holds a horse by the reins. Behind them an old man with a stick crosses a yard in which there are three carts or the like. Behind is a jumbled range of 2 and 3 storey buildings beyond which rises the church. On the right, a small building carries a large notice: "Old Hats Beavoured".
