Oliver Cromwell disolving the Long Parliament
Engraved reproduction of Benjamin West's 1782 painting of the same name which was originally painted for Bowyer's Historic Gallery and is now at Montclair Art Museum, New Jersey. The scene depicted is of Cromwell standing centrally in the crowded parliament chamber. He points at the mace - the symbol of political power - around hims stands numerous politicians and a cluster of armed roundheads. The speaker who is seated in the middle ground conveys the full shock of the moment through his facial and bodily gestures.
