Working History — 1820-1870
Saw, handsaw
This handsaw forms part of a group of tools contained in a fine early 19th century toolchest. Many of the tools are marked W Gray. The saw has no owner's name but is marked 'Hill late Howell'. Joseph Vaughan Hill was a wholesale saw manufacturer whose retail outlet was located close Gray's Inn Road, one of the capital's centres of the building trade. The saw was possibly not part of the original compliment of tools in the chest. The blade is narrowed through extensive use.
