Cromwellian battle scene
This roundel painting depicts a 17th-century battle taking place in a landscape.
The main focus of the painting is a sword fight between two soldiers on horseback. The aggressor, wearing a red plumed hat and riding a brown horse, brandishes his sword in the air. His opponent, sporting blue colours, falls back from his white horse with his sword down. Behind these two figures is a mounted man in armour who rides into the scene, as the battle rages in the background.
One of a pair of paintings in the collection, this painting has been attributed to Bourgononi, an artist who depicted numerous battle scenes.
