Monmouth House, Soho Square
Monmouth House, Soho Square, 1791. This is a small 3 storey quasi-Palladian mansion with a broken pediment framing the second floor. The main windows have semi-circular tops. The pillars for the railings outside are topped with small sculptures of birds with wings open. The house was built by the Duke of Monmouth in the 1680s shortly before his unsuccessful rebellion. After his execution in 1685 it went through various uses, including as an embassy, but was demolished in 1773. On its site Bateman's Buildings now stands.
