The Hook and Rod
Thomas Bremridge, issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Wapping, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 3280; Obv inscription: THOMAS.BREMREDGE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A fish-hook and rod [Boyne has packing-needle]; Rev inscription: IN.WAPPINGE.1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = His / Halfe / Penny (in three lines of cursive script, in field).
The issuer, Thomas Bremridge, is known to have been a Mariner, originally from Devon, but living in Wapping, from his will of 1672 (see Fitch, M (Ed.), Index to Testamentary Record in the Commissary Court of London (London Division) now preserved in Guldhall Library, London, Vol. 4: 1626-1649 and 1661-1700 (London, 1992-8, p. 89. Wapping lies in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, having formerly been part of Stepney, Middlesex.
