The Gridiron
This trade token, worth a farthing was issued for a business in Bishopsgate without, Bishopsgate Ward, City of London. The gridiron depicted is a type of grill used for cooking meat and other food over the fire.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 300; Obv inscription: AT.THE.GRIDE.IRON (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A gridiron (in field); Rev inscription: WITHOVT.BISHOP.GATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = H.M.I. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
