The Custom House
The Custom House, rebuilt by Thomas Ripley in 1717-25 on the site of Wren's building (damaged in 1714 by a gunpowder explosion). This building, which burnt down in 1814, was to the east of the present one. It is seen behind the masts of shipping on the river and there are goods laid out on the foreshore for inspection. From Maitland's History of London. Same as A6695 & Z6854.
