Stationery box
Rectangular mahogany stationery box, with brass strap around whole middle of box, and brass hinged lock and two swinging catches to front. Brass handle to lid of box, attached to brass strap. Three brass brackets to each corner. Inside the box the base is lined with blue paper. The lid of the box has a red compartment door with two small catches. Inside the compartment is lined with embossed wallpaper with a floral and leaf design. The paper has been roughly hand painted in orange, red, green, brown, blue and yellow. A paper label is attached to the top of the compartment inscribed 'JAMES EMON, / The Maker, / At the Two Blue Balls, at the Upper End / of the Hay-Market, LONDON.' Each side of the top of the compartment has a shallow section covered in green velvet, with a semi-circular cut out. Late 18th Cent. There are two keys inside, neither of which appear to fit the box.
