Archaeology — 11th century
Quern
These millstones are made of volcanic rock from the Eifel region in Germany. They were used for grinding corn and had been imported into Britain since the Roman era. The stones were found during excavations at Southwark Bridge. They formed part of a cargo of roughed-out millstones which were uploaded at a Thames quayside, but never finished.
