Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th century
Badge, pilgrim badge
Part of a pilgrim badge. In the centre is a human face. Above it is possibly the figure of a bird or animal but most of the body is missing. Its legs flank the face. Its claws are holding a banner of three shields. The left-hand shield depicts a man holding a banner; the central shield bears five six-pointed stars; the right-hand shield bears a star and a crescent moon. Either side of the face/legs is a wing. It is possible that this is a pilgrim souvenir, but if so, the shrine where it was made is currently unknown.
