Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th century
St Richard?
Pilgrim badge from an unknown shrine. This badge is in the form of a rectangular plate with embossed decoration of an arm and hand. The first and middle fingers of the hand are pointing as if giving a blessing. It has previously been suggested that this badge is a souvenir of St Richard of Chichester (see Guildhall Museum catalogue, 1908, pg. 331). His shrine was at Chichester but his arm was on display at Canterbury cathedral. However, this badge could be a souvenir from a different saint and shrine. Pilgrims who travelled to religious shrines frequently bought souvenirs of their pious journey such as ampullae (small bottles for holy water), badges and figurines.
