Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Elephant and castle
Livery badge in the form of an elephant and castle, dated to the 15th century. The medieval bestiary said that Indian and Persian warriors fought from wooden towers on the backs of elephants. The elephant and castle was a badge of William, Viscount Beaumont (1438-1507). He was an active supporter of Henry VI and was on the losing side at the battles of Towton (1461) and Barnet (1471) and spent the remaining years of Yorkist rule in exile or prison. There are other badges from similar moulds in Salisbury Museum (190t/1987) and the British Museum (1856,0701.2152).
