Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th-15th century
Eagle
Badge in the form of an eagle with spread wings. This is possibly a devotional badge of St John the Evangelist, whose symbol is an eagle. However, eagles of St John usually have a halo and carry a book or scroll in their claws whereas this badge has neither. It may once have had these extra items but they are no longer attached. There are holes on the wings for the badge to be attached to clothing. It was probably not a pilgrim souvenir from a particular shrine but is more likely to have been worn as an aid to devotion.
