Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
The Virgin Mary
Pilgrim badge, probably from the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham at Walsingham Priory in Norfolk. This badge is in the form of a rose with a lily sprouting from its centre. Both the rose and the lily were symbols of the Virgin Mary (the rose was a sign of her love and the lily was a sign of her purity). In the 15th century badges depicting the Annunciation scene (the moment when the Angel Gabriel told Mary that she was to give birth to Christ) within a rose started to be produced at Walsingham so it is likely that this rose and lily badge was made there too. The shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in Norfolk was a popular pilgrimage destination in the medieval period, especially after Henry III made a series of pilgrimages there in the 13th century.
