The Virgin Mary and Christ child
Pilgrim badge of the Virgin Mary from an unknown shrine. This openwork badge shows Mary wearing a crown and sitting on a bench with her feet resting on a low footstool. She holds the infant Christ on her left side. A candle stands on the bench on either side of her. These candles were symbols of Mary’s purity and virginity. Around the scene is a barbed quatrefoil frame with a pearled outer edge. Pilgrims who travelled to holy shrines frequently bought souvenirs of their pious journey such as ampullae (small bottles for holy water), badges and figurines.
