Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 15th century - early 16th century
Knife, table knife
Iron knife with a simple bone handle made from the leg bone of a sheep. There is a maker's mark of a Maltese cross on the blade. People ate with their fingers in the medieval period. The table knife served the dual function of cutting and skewering food, and meat, fish and pies were jointed, carved or sliced into manageable portions.
