Saxon & Medieval — Saxo-Norman; 11th century
Trial piece
Bone carved with incised zoomorphic design and interlaced decoration in the Ringerike style (a style of Scandinavian decoration named after the Ringerike district in Norway, where carved stones have been found). Both the English and the Scandinavians liked complex decoration. Bones and sometimes pottery fragments are found scratched with decorative motifs. The artists may have been trying out ideas, or the bones may have been patterns to show to clients or training guides for apprentices.
