This carved boss in the shape of a head was found on the site of the friary of the Dominican Blackfriars. It was one of the largest and most splendid buildings in London. When the friars came to England in the mid-1200s they were admired for their piety and vows of poverty. People later noticed just how wealthy the friaries had become.
