Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 14th - early 15th century
Altarpiece
Fragment of an alabaster altarpiece showing the upper part of the figures of Christ and a soldier from the group of Christ before Pilate. Thousands of carvings were destroyed during the Dissolution. Many were used for building rubble, others were exported. In 1550, the English Ambassador to France noted that 'three or four ships have lately arrived from England laden with images, which have been sold in Paris, Rouen and other places'. From a brick culvert in Hart Street.
