Costrel
Leather costrel, decorated with a leaf pattern. Soaked in water, leather could be shaped around a pattern or 'former' to make bottles or 'costrels' like this. They were unbreakable and light, ideal for carrying drink on a journey. As the medieval poet Geoffrey Chaucer wrote 'therewithall a costrel taketh he, And said "hereof a draught or two or three"'.
