Saxon & Medieval — Early Medieval; 12th century-14th century
Sheath
Leather knife sheath with impressed decoration on front and back. There is an extension or wing to one side which has two main suspension slots and two smaller ones. The decoration is divided into two panels to reflect the handle and blade areas. The front has impressed chevrons, scrolls and linear motifs. The back has closely spaced impressed horizontal lines in the handle area and diagonal along the blade. There is a centre back seam with edge/grain stitch holes. This seam probably also originally had a small triangular insert, which is now missing. The sheath is now in two pieces.
Sheaths of a similar form and decoration have been found in Dublin (Cameron, 2007) dating to the 12th to 13th century. This example has been published: Ward-Perkins, J.B., London Museum Medieval Catalogue, London, 1940, 191
