Saxon & Medieval — Early Medieval; 12th century-13th century
Sheath
Leather knife sheath with impressed decoration on front and back. The decoration is divided into two sections to reflect the handle and blade areas. There is also an upper side extension or wing with two suspension slots for a thong. Both the front and back are partly covered with a hard concretion. The decoration on the front is hard to see but appears to be running animals, perhaps indicating that this held a hunting knife. The outlines of the animals are impressed and their bodies are decorated with pricked dots. The back is decorated with impressed lines and zig-zags and has a centre back seam with edge/grain stitch holes.
