Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th-15th century
Sheath
Large leather knife or dagger sheath with decorated front and back surfaces. The front is highly decorated with incised patterns and part of the grain surface cut away to reveal the contrasting flesh surface below. The front is covered with a panel of scrolling foliage framed by rows of small triangles. The back is plainer with simple incised linear motifs. There is a side of centre seam with flesh/grain stitch holes. The mouth is very damaged and incomplete.
