Saxon & Medieval — Early Medieval; 12th century-13th century
Sheath
Incomplete leather knife sheath with the tip missing. The front and back are decorated with panels of geometric, linear and interlace impressed motifs. The sheath has a wing or extension projecting from one side of the upper part and there is a centre back seam with edge/grain stitch holes. There are three suspension slots in the side extension.
This is similar to examples from Dublin (Cameron 2007, particularly 109, fig 37, no. DLS 194). The present example has been published: Ward-Perkins, J.B., London Museum Medieval Catalogue, London, 1940, 190 & Pl XLIV, no. 1
