Saxon & Medieval — Medieval; 13th-14th century
Sheath
A near complete leather knife sheath with impressed decoration; now in three pieces. The sheath is slightly moulded so that the handle area is rounder than the blade area. The decoration is divided into two sections reflecting the handle and blade areas. On the front it consists of scrolling foliate and simple interlace motifs with a possible interlace animal on the blade section. The back has very simple impressd linear decoration. There is a side seam with edge/grain stitch holes along one side. The other side appears to have been trimmed. There is a single suspension slot at the back. The tip of the sheath is quite blunt and almost square.
