Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Purse
Fragment of a lead alloy badge in the shape of the metal bar from the top of a purse. The rest of the purse frame is missing. Late medieval purses often had metal frames onto which the fabric or leather was stitched. These frames had suspension loops that the top so that purses could be hung from their owner's belts. Many medieval lead alloy badges and pendants in the shape of miniature purses have been found. Their purpose is not completely understood but they may be lucky symbols to encourage wealth for their wearers.
