Goblet
Goblet made in Alsatian Blue glass. The flared bucket bowl and conical foot diamond-moulded and the stem with an optic blown ribbed knop. Pattern no. 1208, probably designed by Harry Powell in c.1903-14 and produced until at least 1926. Handwritten label on bowl, "Soda glass containing MgO [magnesium oxide] coloured with iron scales". Although Alsatian Blue soda glass was made as early as 1888, this piece appears to be a later design. This shape is recorded in the Pattern Book of 1903-1910. A similar piece with gold inclusions in the knop was shown at Paris in 1914 (cat. 404, 54: "Vase bleu d'Alsace, forme carré"), an example of which is in the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford (G416). Arch. H & Q. cf. Exh. Paris 1914. Illustrated in W. Evans, C. Ross and A. Werner, Whitefriars Glass. James Powell & Sons of London, London 1995, pl. 47 on p. 54.
