Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; early 15th century
Seal matrix
This vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix belonged to Bishop Thomas Barry. It is engraved with the design of a seated bishop under a canopy with the Trinity above and a praying bishop below. The seated bishop is flanked by two shields of arms (chief indented and barry of seven). Around the edge is an inscription in black letter: ':sigillu:thome:dei:/:gracia:ossorien:epi'. Sealed documents underlined the power and authority of the church. Leading clerics used personal seals to authenticate documents.
