Archaeology — Medieval; mid 13th century
Leather, boot
This pair of boots was found in a rubbish pit at St Mary Spital hospital. They may have belonged to a woman as they are relatively small (modern English size 4) and have decorative thongs threaded through the leather. Each sole is made from one piece of leather and has worn through at the heel and ball of the foot on each boot. They were probably slip-on boots as there is no evidence for any laces. The boots were repaired at least once before they were finally thrown away as there are stitching holes around the worn areas.
