Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Seal matrix
Merchant's double seal matrix, which has a small seal on one end and a large one on the other. The large seal bears a merchant's mark within a hexagon and an inscription in black letter: 's' iohan demeken'. The small seal bears the same merchant's mark in a beaded border. Indispensable for business, personal seals and signet rings were used to authenticate legal and financial transactions. Merchants' rings were often engraved with a monogram or distinctive device that identified their goods and property.
