Menasseh Ben Israel's mission to Oliver Cromwell
Book entitled 'Menasseh Ben Israel's mission to Oliver Cromwell; being a reprint of the pamphlets published by Menasseh Ben Israel to promote the re-admission of the Jews to England 1649 - 1656'. The book was published in 1901 for the Jewish Historical Society edited by the journalist and political lobbyist Lucien Wolf, a past President of the Society. Menasseh Ben Israel was a rabbi of the Portuguese Sephardi community in Amsterdam. Jews had been expelled from England in 1290 by Edward I. However Cromwell was in favour of readmitting them partly because of the Puritan religious belief that once Jews inhabited all parts of the world the final redemption could begin, but also more pragmatically for the benefits that Jewish international trading could bring for the country.
