Printed Ephemera — 1892
Manuscript
The handwritten lyrics of 'My Old Dutch' composed by Albert Chevalier. The song was composed one foggy night in the summer of 1892, as Chevalier made his way through Islington to appear at Collins Music Hall. Now and then he paused, leaning against a lamppost to scribble down the lines in his pocketbook as they occurred to him. The composition notes have been written in pencil by Chevalier on seven ruled sheets. One of the sheets includes inked sketches.
My Old Dutch expressed the love of an ageing Costermonger for his honest and faithful wife. It became one of Chevalier’s best loved songs.
