Saxon & Medieval — Early Saxon-Middle Saxon; 6th-early 7th century
Fish-shaped mount
This fish-shaped mount was found on the Thames foreshore at Barnes in 1977. It is made of copper-alloy (brass or bronze); the 'body' and 'fins' are plated with gold, the 'head' and 'tail' with silver; the surface is decorated with incised lines and punched ovals. Stylised 'fish' (in some cases they are recognisable as pike) like this were used as decoration on Anglo-Saxon shields owned by wealthy men. Shields were made of wood, sometimes painted or covered with leather.
