Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th-15th century
Christ
Part of a pilgrim badge from an unknown shrine. This fragment depicts a crucifix (the base and left side are missing). The edges of the cross are beaded and the terminals of the horizontal limb of the cross are decorated with four circles. The figure of Christ is quite crude and faint. Before the Reformation in the 16th century, every church had a large crucifix, known as a rood, on display. Some roods were associated with miracles and became the focus for pilgrimages.
