Doll
Small doll with a solid wax head and limbs attached to a stuffed cloth body, in its original paper-covered chip box. It is typical of the large quantities of cheap imported dolls which could be found in London shops.
An inscription in the lid records the tragic history of this doll. 'Letitia Hawkins. Died 13th Dec. 1852 at 8 years. This doll was given the night before.' At this time children of Letitia's age were particularly at risk of dying from scarlet fever, tuberculosis, measles and whooping cough.
