Working History — 1820-1870
Stencil, letter stencil
This short strip of stencil letters (W, X and Z) forms part of a set of other stencils contained in one of the drawers of a fine early 19th century toolchest. The precise function of these stencils is unknown though they could have been used by a patternmaker to mark wooden pattern parts.
In this example, some remnants of black paint survive around one of the letters. The paint was probably applied with a brush or a dabber.
