The Hare; The Rabbit ?
Nicholas Warrin (Warren) issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Aldersgate Street, Aldersgate Ward, City of London. On one side of the token is a running hare symbol, a pun on the issuers name. On the other side are a triad of initials 'W' over 'I and 'N'.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 61; Obv inscription: NICHOLAS.WARRIN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A running hare (in field); Rev inscription: IN ALDERSGATE STRET (around field, in Roman capitals) Devive, = N.I.W. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
There is another similar token in the museum collection, NN17562. See also number 6450 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London.
