Toy machine gun
Mechanical tinplate toy Maxim machine gun. Unpainted tin, with thick double supports and a large bore barrel below a vertical drum. The drum would be filled with shot and turned by a wire crank side handle. A hole in the drum allows shot to fall into barrel and two projections cause a metal strip to snap back under tension, thus firing shots rapidly. Marked 'MAXIM patent Machine Gun Trade Mark'. Purchased for one penny (1d) from a London street trader on 24th November 1896.
