Prehistoric — Neolithic; 3,500 - 2,750 BCE
Jar
A Neolithic ceramic fragment from a Peterborough ware bowl (Mortlake/Fengate type) dating 3,500 to 2,750 BCE. The fragment comprises part of the rim, neck and body of the jar. It is decorated with deep finger impressions on the neck. Casts taken of the finger impressions show that it had been decorated by someone with slender fingers and long fingernails, probably a woman or a youth.
Pottery was first introduced to Britain during the Neolithic period. This new technology also meant new vessel forms which facilitated different methods of cooking and so different recipes.
